2013 Area Players Not Wasting Time

Over the weekend, I found out three additional 2013 players had made a decision on where their next stop would be. Courtney Latham (Tulane), Brentney Branch (SFA) and Alea Godfrey (Bethune Cookman) joined Christin Inman (Northwestern) and Alexia Sanders (Rice) as players who are ranked in my GPR 2013 Top 30 to give a verbal. Getting it done early is a growing trend and if you're sure, why not because so many things can happen and many of them are not good but I always like to put this link at the bottom out there for parents and players to read and hopefully they comprehend the message.

Throughout the years, I can't tell you how many parents have told me they thought their children would play for a Top 25 program like North Carolina or LSU, mind you some of these players didn't make any All District teams or were even starters on their high school teams however someone placed that idea in their heads. The main thing is getting an education, free or subsidized, out of this whole thing and although most won't have a chance to receive offers from Baylor or Stanford, getting a degree is the icing on the cake.

The second link is titled EVALUATING which is something that's truly hard for some parents and players to do. I didn't write the articles, in fact I don't agree with everything that's written in either however much of it is true and it's worth a look so you won't be shocked when it's all said and done.

True story, three years ago I'm checking out another team and I see these guards going off on another court. I've never seen these players but they were like clones, interchangeable pieces to a machine running with precision that I had to find out who they were. Alexia Torres was one of the guards, I'm watching this young lady drop 30 footers yet timing the inbound passes just right to get steals for layups numerous times. Torres is a player, any misconceptions you may have are WRONG, I've truly enjoyed this team get after it and beat teams on paper they are not supposed to, yes I will always root for the underdog, well most of the time

Can she shoot it? You missed what I said in the first paragraph, yeah she's a long ball threat yet over the years I've watched her add finishing off the dribble with contact as well as the midrange but when you can shoot and also happen to be a very smart player, you can turn games around and believe me I have seen some excitement from this young lady. UNSIGNED Alexia Torres CLUTCH and RANGE

After being named All Tournament at the Jack Frost Classic ,Alexia Torres continues to do some spectacular things including a couple of 25 point scoring games in that very tournament. Torres has been solid ever since I started watching her play three years and one of the players that has left me many exciting memories including several buzzer beaters. This got me thinking about just how many times this young lady has done just that and I truly don’t know however on top of everything I’ve said about this talented unsigned guard, not only does she want the ball in the clutch, she also delivers and with her range, knowledge of the game and skill set, I'm certain of what she'll be able to do at the next level

In her freshman season as starting Varsity Point Guard for Marshall HS, she had a number of them. The video shows 3 buzzer beaters in the same game. As a sophomore against crosstown right Rival Antonian HS, she had a number of deep 3's in the 3rd quarter capped by a buzzer beater. As a junior, she had 3  memorable ones, 1st from half court, 2nd to win the game against a state ranked SA Cole, 2rd came in her final game of the playoffs. As a senior, she hits a buzzer beater at the Jack Frost Tournament. Maybe her last, maybe she still has a few more up her sleeve and I’m banking on the latter. Look this young lady has unbelievable range, I'm serious LOOK AT THE VIDEO

I crossed paths with the San Antonio Islanders so many times last season until I almost had every player memorized. This was and still is a very exciting filled with talented players that will be playing somewhere after their high school careers are over. This is also a throwback type of squad filled with smarts and skills to go along with that talent and when they get going, they can simply put up  numbers very quickly iun fact I've seen them erase double digit deficits in a little over a minute, do the math

2016 Under The Radar Alexia Torres is vital to what this team does, she can score, from just anywhere, she can handle the ball, sees the floor and knows how to not only create for herself but her teammates as she sees the floor very well. Torres also does something that  really love watching players do, well she does a lot of things I love watching them do but her ability to play the passing lane for steals is something I truly enjoy

Alexia Torres makes decision

There are so many diamonds in  the rough that I've simply watched from a young age and I knew Alexia Torres was going to amaze me years ago. Although I never caught her putting on a show for her Incarnate Word HS squad, I caught her numerous times doing some pretty unbelievable things with her San Antonio Islanders club squad

Some said she was too small, I said whatever, she simply got the job done and when you have certain things you can't teach, like comprehending the game and breaking it down, you're in the mix but what sealed it for me as far as evaluating her was watching her shoot the ball and she will go to St. Mary's University as one of the state's best long ball shooters.

She played the one when needed, she showed she could defend and her ability to play the passing lanes ranks among the best I've seen in her class but when you have players that always have a knack for being around the ball, players that are willing to take the shot under pressure and players that can DELIVER better than my mailman, you've definitely got something

I asked Torres on why she decided on St Mary's and she said " I really liked how close it was to my home, my family and friends can still watch me and I think I can help the program" Torres also said " the atmosphere just felt right, it's a small close knit group"

Unsigned shooter Alexia Torres on fire for Incarnate Word

Over the past four seasons, a team that was on my must see list was the San Antonio Islanders because what they possessed was a group of young ladies who simply played smart, played hard and beat several teams that on paper they shouldn't have.. On top of all of that, they had numerous guards that could drop long ball and anticipate the pass and Alexia Torres simply blew me away watching her over that time span. I haven't seen her play at Incarnate Word however over the weekend Torres helped lead her squad to the Sharpstown Rotary Tournament by defeating three talented teams, SATCH, Westbury Christian and Kinkaid and all three of those teams have legitimate D1 players on them

Torres was named MVP of the tournament averaging just under 14 ppg and she did it without having to shoot the long ball a lot which shows how complete her game has become, she also added 3.6 assists and 2 steals per game for the event, keep in mind Westbury Christian and Kincaid are ranked in the Top 10 on TABC Private School, well so is IWHS but this sort of sets the stage for whats coming. Last night, Torres dropped 17 against TABC 6A #3 ranked San Antonio Wagner, star sophomore Sophia Ramos added 26 as they pulled off a 62-53 win

Let me start off by saying that three years ago, one of the smartest moves I've made was doing a "special request" and making sure I caught the SA Islanders. The only thing I like more than guards that can shoot the lights out are smart guards that can shoot the lights out, well I like of things but the story fits since it's about Alexia Torres

This young lady was amazed me in a short period of time and I've seen her continue to add different things to her game as she simply finds ways to score, from 30 feet on in, okay 27 feet but anyway she knows the game and she gets the job done on both ends #MensaBasketball works !!!!

I've put up a lot of videos of SA Islanders gaurd Alexia Torres over the last couple of seasons and one thing those videos showed was her ability to score, off the dribble, going to the basket, hitting the midrange and range some radar can't even detect but one thing I always talk about when I evaluate players is progression and even though she showed me she was one of the states top long ball shooters a couple of years ago, she just keeps getting better and in this video, you can see even more defense and athleticism from the 2016 Under The Radar player along with her court vision and even more ways to score. You can't teach some things and smart guards with all of her other attributes are a plus, awe just enjoy the video from Incarnate Word (San Antonio) junior

CLEAR BROOK VS CLEAR SPRINGS

If you had a chance to watch the game on Comcast last night, you already know it was exciting. After a seesaw battle the whole first half, which was tied at 29, Springs pulled out in the third period,

Paced by freshman JoAnn Lira (13) and Morgan Kilgore (18), Springs never looked back and won 63-55. Kiara Rednon was a "BEAST" for Clear Brook, scoring (22) while Adelyn Ezeh added 13.

Lira, Kaylin Roher and Tiffany Terry are three freshmen on Clear Springs varsity which is on pace to equal an abundance of talent in the 2012 class. Houston's future is looking good!

Aaliyah Brown is another one of those guards from a loaded 2012 class.

Mileka Loydrake's return next season will make Springs an early favorite next season. Spring is losing five players, but their future is bright. Coach Crawford built Brook into a powerhouse, looks like it's happening again.

Freshman Sharpshooter Chelsea Ngo will give Clear Brook an offensive boost for the next three years, one of the best shooters in the area.

Lira was outstanding, hitting back to back threes, assisting on another and driving to the lane for an and one opportunity. After the game, I congratulated her on scoring, her response, "Thanks Coach but the points don't matter" Right attitude, smart kid!

2013

Clear Springs and Clear Brook have some talented freshmen coming up through the ranks. Courtney Mickens who is out with knee injury and Jerilyn James, I missed her game because the varsity was on Comcast and JV switched game time with the freshmen, are two of the up and comers.

Alexia Sandoval and Kelly Quinorez are two of the talented freshmen guards for Springs.

Along with the guards, Alysse Dowdy, Tyasia Thomas,Ryshanique Ball and Madison Harris, this is on one of the best freshmen squads I've seen in a long time.

Area 2013 Class Filled With Blue Collar Players

I have never seen a class mirror another in back to back seasons and it appears things happen in cycles.In 2012, there was a variety of offensive minded players that could score on you from multiple ways and while the class of 2013 has some players like that, there isn't an abundance in the area like it was from the previous class. Two of the most athletic players from 2013 have already committed, Christen Inman (Northwestern) and Alexia Sanders (Rice) however the versatility from the different types of players are not lacking as you have several next level players.

AJ Alix is one of the top point guards in the state. I always say the game starts at the one, that's the real and also why she's the "Real Deal".  That's my favorite saying along with one I've modified, "you can't teach height, especially when they can play"

Sandra Meadows- Day 2 Preview

Lot's of interesting things happened on opening day in the Sandra Meadows Classic as several teams I expected to win didn't. The states top three ranked private schools lost as well as the areas highest ranked public school which leads me to believe that there will be an abundance of talent for me to see today. McNeese State signed a couple of Top 100 guards who play for St Thomas More, Keke Veal and Kia Wilridge, and they will play in one of the days marquee match-ups against THESA who has the nations #1 point guard,Connecticut signee Moriah Jefferson. Action packed day ahead and of course, more to come

College Park and Hightower are the only area teams left who haven't lost. Tyler Gilbert led three Hurricane players who scored in double figures with 19 points while Uma Rajagopalan and Alexia Sanders combined for 29 of College Parks 48 points in their victory.

I had a chance to see several Girlz Prep Report "Under The Radar" players in action over the weekend and to say they all did well would be an understatement. "It's not what you do, it's who you do it against" and equally as important "It's also who you do it in front of" and one more time, I talking about me

2015

Brooke Jolivette (Cy Fair Jolivette) Don't get shook by Brooke is something I love to type and she's doing it with regularity. Her size makes her an and one waiting to happen but that midrange was click as well as the long range as she simply made things happen

Charlotte Hodges (Cy Fair Jolivette) Simply a premium player for the next level because she's right at the magic number, that's six feet, and she can not only score consistently in the paint, she can stretch the defense with her range. Hodges just won't quit and as a bonus she rebounded well on both ends

2016

Alexia Torres (San Antonio Islanders)- Torres is a smart and gifted guard that simply can shoot the lights out but her basketball IQ is what continues to blow me away. She gets to whatever spot she wants on offense, sees the floor well and can either take defenders off the dribble or launch it from , well San Antonio

Maci Forsythe (Lady Big Dogs) There's no surprise that Forsythe is leading her team in three point accuracy but the main thing I like from what I'm seeing is her aggressiveness on both ends. She's a good ball handler that knows the game and the added intensity I'm seeing will be huge for the next level

Returnees key to SA Islanders Black season #Hoopfest WNBA Black runner-up

I'll come back to Under The Radar players Alexia Torres and Erin Wimberly later today as I  do combination of both the Hoopfest and CF Invite on those GPR UTR young ladies. What I will say is this team has knocked off some teams many didn't think they were supposed to over the past two seasons and even though I don't care about wins and losses, it makes a good story when the underdog pulls it off, even without sweet Polly Purebread

Wimberly, Torres, Belle Tovar and Analissa Narro have all suffered some type of injury but the return of Tovar and Narro was especially good to see after knee injuries. Both are explosive and can shoot mid to long range but this is a team of talented smart guards that play the passing lanes and can shoot the lights out and when multiple players are on, they can play with anybody in the state, I'm not exaggerating or just leaving happy hour, it's real. Victoria Pena can light it up, I'm extra pleased at the poise from Tara Molina who has simply elevated her game as well as Alexis Worley who was a nightmare in the paint the past two weekend on both ends

Atascocita Too Strong For College Park

Atascocita's Rachel Arthur has been on a torrid scoring streak over the last month and she continued that shooting exhibition against College Park in which scored 8 of her 15 points in the opening period, this included 2 threes. Curtyce Knox came back from an ACL injury after only 5 months and I thought she was close to 75% in the Sandra Meadows Classic, well now she appears to be a little over 80% as the acrobatics and speed are showing little signs of a letdown.

Knox put on an exhibition of her own mostly in the second half and finished with 20. Lauren Price, the third of "The Taz" Big Three kind of filled in between as she finished the game with close to a double-double while joining Arthur and Knox by hitting a three herself.

What does this mean? Well it depends on how you look at it and as far as district, to be honest I've already given the title to The Woodlands however 6'0 freshman Anacia Wilkinson showed quite a jump from what I saw a month ago.

Using the phrase "you can't teach height" which only applies on the girls' side if you actually utilize your ability, Wilkinson is going to be a player before it's all said and done and for them to even think about having a chance to beat the Highlanders the next time around, this young lady will have to play big against Kelsey Lang, well  the "Big Three" will all have to go off as well

Alexia Standish dropped 25 for College Park who have been plagued all season by the loss of Megan Shafer to Rice and the loss of a couple transfers. At times they have looked really good but when your post, Armani Asberry, doesn't start and plays sparingly because of a virus, you have to face reality but nevertheless they put a up a solid fight and never quit. More than likely this was for positions 2 and 3 in the playoffs but I didn't expect The Woodlands to beat Atascocita last year, so.................
