Fort Bend ISD Shows Youth Are Hungry

Kayla Nevitt is one of the top 2014 players in the city, wait state, well actually country and it seems like only yesterday I was teasing her about laying on her mother. Time has flown, she has grown and established herself as a "PLAYER" which is good news for Dekaney as they won their first big tournament, the FBISD. In the semifinal game on Saturday, Kayla scored 18 points, to go along with Alexis Durley's (22) and big sister Shunta (14) in a (64-61) win over GPR Preseason #2 Hightower. The Hurricanes lost Taylor Gilbert to a knee injury earlier this season but twin sisterTyler (23) and Jasmine Prophett (20) gave Dekaney all they could handle. Manvel's Jordan Hosey, pictured to the right of Kayla Nevitt, is one of the top 2015 players in the country.

Their route to the championship game on Saturday was even tougher than Dekaney's as their #7 ranking was put to a test against #9 Elsik, the defending R-3 champion. These teams battled through not one but two overtimes but Manvel prevailed (47-43). Hosey was coming off a breakout performance Friday night in which she scored 21 points. Brianna Turner,above, is the #1 player in the Class of 2014. Some have her ranked 2 or 3 but if you're ranking on the now, I want to see the other players because she's a triple double waiting to happen. Not only did she compliment Hosey's performance with  17 points herself on Friday night, she had a triple double against Dekaney in the championship. This game was a lot closer than the final score indicated and Saturday evening ended on a good note, well for me at least because I saw some good things from a lot of teams. More on Dekaney 

Texas Inviatational Closes With A Bang

One of the definitions of an EMPRESS is "the woman ruler of an empire". Since Duncanville brings so much history to the table in Texas Girl's Basketball, I guess they could be considered an empire. I also imagine after the performance Empress Davenport (Texas) put on this weekend, she can definitely be considered a ruler. Duncanville was clicking on all cylinders at the Texas Invitational and Davenport was a big reason why. She is only one of many weapons however her versatility was the deciding factor and I was EMPRESSED to say the least

Kiara Perry also played huge over the weekend, doing things that normally don't come up in the box score but prove to be valuable once it is all said and done. This was the best game I have seen all season, hands down and the type of game our area needs to generate more fan interest. Here's a link to more on the Panthers on the Girlz Prep Report website.

I wouldn't be surprised to see both of these teams in Austin but it's early and to be honest, you never know what's going to happen in February. More on the teams and individual players from the Texas Invitational along with my first looks at Elsik, Hightower, Manvel and Dekaney, along with why a couple of sensational sophomores are turning out to be the best area players this season.

Majors Answer Many Questions

A lot of unanswered questions were answered at the two biggest tournaments going on in the area. By now I'm sure you know Duncanville won the Texas Invitational and Dekaney won the Fort Bend ISD. Several stories are coming in the morning but right now just enjoy Thompson Intermediate. Also let me give another s/o to the folks at Texas Invitational and thanks for keeping me full!

Sensational Sophomores Lead Teams To Final Fours

Brooke McCarty, right, has been playing with the flu, however if you saw her during the Texas Invitational, it would be more like flew as she has been flying by opponents averaging well over 20 ppg. This morning  she and Clear Springs take on Mansfield Summit to see who will advance to the finals at 1:30. That team will play the winner of the Duncanville-Cy Falls match-up.

At the Fort Bend ISD Tournament, Brianna Turner and 4-A Manvel are showing they can play with the big guns in 5-A and this afternoon around 1:30 they have to tangle with last seasons R3 representative Elsik and their "Big Three" of Porter, Oconas and Elonu. Turner will be joined with freshman sensation Jordan Hosey who scored 21 points last night while Turner added 17. The winner of that game will play whoever wins the "High Noon" Dekaney vs Hightower match-up tonight at 7.

GPR's Fantastic Friday Player-Shernise Robertson

Cy Falls is one of the most explosive teams in the STATE. I have said it before and I'll say it again, this squad has 5 players that can drop 20 on you on any given night and not too many teams can say that. Not too many teams can say they have a player like Shernise Robertson and let me back track a bit. Prior to last season, Robertson was a Chronicle Preseason All Greater Houston however an injury sent her to the sidelines which opened the door for Sedalia Ellis to run the point. When Robertson came back, she was providing offense off the bench and she played that part to a tee and was a big reason for Cy Falls (38-2) record last season. Fast forward to this season, she has put some highlight stuff together that is Sports Center worthy and if you witnessed her performance against Desoto, a team I feel has one of the best back courts in the state, try this on for size. 26 points, 14 in the first quarter including 3 threes, not to mention 5 assists. Cy Falls already has three signed D1 players and I told you another would be signing later. Those cute little free magazines don't give you what I do, useful information, so coaches here's a freebie that you can use, this kid is a LEGITIMATE D1 player and I give her my "GURU" stamp of approval!

Today is WHAT?

That's right, the biggest day ever for Houston GBB. The big questions in the Texas Invitational is will the local teams advance to the gold round or will Mansfield Summit, Duncanville, Desoto or North Crowley put a dent in those plans? Clear Springs, Cy Falls, Bellaire and either North Shore or the Woodlands say hold up GPR

Texas Invitational From Sluggish To Sensational

I said the game of the day would be North Shore vs The Woodlands and one thing I hate is being wrong, especially when I'm not their to witness an upset, something I tweeted saying there were none, well maybe I was wrong about that as well. Mansfield Summit, featuring Ashley Eli, beat The Woodlands (55-53) and Pearland (54-23). This sets the stage for a showdown between North Shore, who lost to The Woodlands (50-44) however a Mustang win could create a three way tie to see who goes to the gold bracket in what appears to have been the toughest pool

Clear Springs put on a clinic today, well all day and the shooting exhibition I saw this morning, 14-19 from bta, with SEVEN different players dropping a three and Brooke McCarty leading the way with games of 22 and 31 points. They meet N Crowley to see who makes it to gold

AJ Alix, Bianca Winslow and Raven Burns are Bellaire's "Big Three". My first look at them in the regular season was exactly what I expected as they went 2-0 and meet Duncanville to see who goes to the gold. One problem is Winslow may not play, she went out early in first half with a bad cut on her knee.

Cy Falls Loryn Goodwin has landed quite well in the Eagles nest as she continues to impress. If Falls is clicking, few teams are in their league and their game against Desoto should be a barn burner, yes it's for gold.

Games Ready To Live Up To Hype

The first MAJOR Tournament starts today, well technically the first two as the Fort Bend ISD joins the Texas Invitational and both tournaments have some exciting young talent along with several teams capable of making a run come February. Two of the young stars on hand are Clear Creek's Taylor Longley (28) and Brentney Branch (24) who combined for 52 points in a game for the 2-1 Wildcats last week. Remember tomorrow is the biggest day ever for Houston basketball as far as talented teams playing each other. This is what you want to promote in order to generate fan interest and I can't wait to see the buzz floating around on twitter as we will soon see who the early "Queens Of The Castles" are

Speaking of ex College Park player Monique Smalls, she and Texas Tech come to town to face off against  Porsche Landry and the University of Houston Cougars. Also former hometown stars, freshmen Mileka Loydrake and Danielle Parks suit up for the Cougs!

HBU @ Rice Tonight!

Plenty of local talent on the roster for both teams and I will get a chance to see a couple of freshmen in action for the first time since they graduated from high school

Taylor "TJ" Jefferson (HBU)- one of the best 10 year olds I have ever seen. Went on to run the point for "Da Shore" after Lauren Flores left and kept the Mustangs among the top teams in the state

One of the best shooters to come out of the city and could easily be known as "Miss Clutch" as she put so many daggers through opponents at College Park. After Monique Smalls went on Texas Tech, many thought CP was done, Shafer proved them wrong!
