Peggy Whitley Classic-North Shore Wins It One MO Time

Tis the season for Christmas parties but I wanted to give a s/o to North Shore for winning the Peggy Whitley Classic in back to back seasons before heading out. Monique Bedford ,who scored 16 points in the championship game, was named MVP while freshman Adriiana Jackson won the tournament Outstanding Defensive Player Award. This tournament showed me one thing, well I'm lying, it showed me several things. In Region 3, Cy Falls and Clear Springs are the top two teams but we "ain't" counting nobody out as far as winning this team. The heart Elsik showed without big sister Ocanas and having baby sister Ocanas stepping up under pressure will go a long way in helping replace what was lost from last season, Raven Hill and Lyndsey Cypher sitting on bench, sorry I'm a GURU in basketball and a few other things but not photography.

Da Shore won without Brooke McCarty playing for Springs, so if you want, put an asterisk by the championship win but also place one by the names of North Shore players Jaylan Robinson, two big threes, a drive down the lane for two and a behind the back pass on the money in transition for a bucket, along with Brashae Adams who added 11 points today and was solid all weekend by not only finishing on the offensive end but banging on the boards. If you wan't to see some collegiate action, U of H hosts HBU today at 2pm while Nicholls State visits TSU on Sunday also at 2pm.

Peggy Whitley Classic-Saturday Championship Preview

I mentioned Brooke McCarty injured her ankle in the quarterfinal game against Klein Collins, a game Clear Springs held on to win 80-73. Aaliyah Brown (18) and Courtney Latham (14) provided the offensive punch to help offset Veja Hamilton (29) and Dominique Dillingham (21) in a game that could have gone either way

Once again the heroics of Kaylyn Roher and Crystal Porter, not to mention Gabby Ocanas, in the semifinals was simply amazing

Peggy Whitley Classic-Clear Springs Roher Too Loud For Elsik

Like I called it for the Final 4, Cy Woods vs North Shore and a Region 3 semi-final rematch between Elsik and Clear Springs. What I didn't bet on was point guard Brooke McCarty being injured against Klein Collins earlier in the day or Elsik not having their point guard Jasmine Ocanas but nevertheless, this was the most exciting game I've attended this year, that includes the Texas Invitational and the NCAA Final 4. Okay maybe I'm exaggerating just a little but several unheralded players stepped up and in a big way. Kaylyn Roher hit at least 5 threes and had close to 30, chron.com doesn't even have her listed, only Aaliyah Brown's 15

They do have Crystal Porter's 30 and Akunna Elonu's 10, but let me set the stage for you so I can call it a night. Elsik is down by three with 20 plus seconds and as the clock winds down, they attack the basket, fortunately the ball goes out of bounds because they needed a three. With 1.1 seconds left Jasmine's younger sister, Gabby Ocanas,  takes a dribble and almost MATRIX style hit's a three at the buzzer for overtime, she finished with 15. In the overtime, Elsik is down by two and Porter hit's a bucket with 2.2 seconds to tie the game at 63 only to have Roher bank a 35 footer in for the win. Much more to come, OUT!

Peggy Whitley Classic Preview Round 2

Klein Collins has pulled off some big wins over the past two seasons and today they face Clear Springs, the winner of that gane will face the Elsik vs Elkins winner at 8pm. Should Elsik and Clear Springs win, this will be a rematch of last seasons R3 Final Four semi-final game

On the other side of the bracket North Shore takes on Clear Lake while Midway battles Cy Woods. Should North Shore and Cy Woods go on to win, that game would feature a couple of the top freshmen in the city, Adriiana Jackson from the Shore and Erica Ogwumike from the Woods, that semi final would be at 5pm

What Separates Dekaney

More of a statement than a question but what you have folks are two signed D1 players who are going to play in major conferences, Alexis Durley (Cincinnati) and Shunta Nevitt (Texas Tech). Brianna Taylor, left, has been injury prone throughout high school however I gave the verdict on her while she was in middle school and if she is healthy this summer there is no telling where she can go

I'll sum it up like this, add Kayla Nevitt to list of  national Top 100 players from the  Houston in the Class of 2014 

I saw the athleticism Jaleesa Chapel and Amber Driver had while they were in middle school, they teamed with Taylor in the 8th grade, and the few flaws either had would be corrected with work and maturity which has elevated them into next level players. As great as the other players are, these two have provided Dekaney with a luxury not many teams have and that's not lose much if a player get's in foul trouble or is injured as what has happened early in the season with Taylor and post Kadetra Obrine

With Carol Willie banging, running and finishing, Cy Falls will be hard to beat

With Lauren Goodwin coming up with with double-doubles every game, Cy Falls will be hard to beat

With Dekaney having SIX players capable of scoring 20 points, they will be hard to beat, Alexis Durley (23) and Kayla Nevitt (20) help that dubious honor tonight in one of the best games of the season. Check out GPR for more
