Metroplex Friday shows present and future

Duncanville traveled to Skyline with their 70 plus game winning streak on the line and after the game was over, it's still going and to be honest with you, I don't see it stopping this season which would take it over 100. Ariel Atkins simply makes things happen and I can't say this enough but she is simply one of the best players I've ever seen. Atkins and Tasia Forman set the stage, their teammates feed off of their intensity and the additions of Tiara Davenport and Cierra Johnson has all but guaranteed a threepeat.

Skyline is a very good and talented team and I haven't seen everyone in their region but I would be surprised if they aren't in Austin as well. I talked about Cristalah Lyons over the summer and I was equally impressed as she did well against the Duncanville heat and even though they didn't win tonight and probably won't win state this season, with one senior on the team, they're early favorites for next season, especially since Alexandria Gulley and Jordan Alexander are helping set the tone

Irving MacArthur traveled to McKinney North and the nationally ranked team joined at least two other state ranked teams that have been beaten by this team that's going t make a run at a 4A state title. Mikaehla Connor simply knows how to put the ball in the basket and she set the tone early and Chanteria Jackson kept it going on the offensive end. The Bulldogs bring heat the whole game and they have the personnel to do just that and Breah Powell, one of the four talented freshman on the squad helps spearhead it. I left at half time to attend Duncanville and Skyline however Tana Driver kept them in the game on an array of baskets and assists to have them down by only one. The box score indicates North opened things up in the third quarter despite Tory Jacobs catching fire

SBISD opens with few surprises

No crystal ball needed for this one, Cy Falls will play Cy Ranch for the SBISD championship tomorrow at high noon after each go through the formality of playing two games today. Ranch looks a lot better than they did at The Last Run and based on what I saw, I can see why DiDi Richards wanted me to hold off on crowning Cy Woods district champ. Richards is playing huge so far this season and I'm pretty sure being a freshman hasn't fazed her one bit. Even better news is that Sydney Coleman is playing like nothing after happened, she's more fluid and confident than when I saw her earlier. Those two played huge dividends yesterday as they ran the floor while Cienna Rivera was hitting them wit pinpoint passes for countless breakaways and when you through in the fact that the whole team was in sync, they're going to create some problems, especially when you have someone like Rachel Tapps igniting the defense

Cy Falls looked real good early however in the best game of the day, they narrowly got by Klein Forest who played without starters Ebony Parker and Regina Scott and Ekiyah Gray went out late in the game with leg cramps and the offense fizzled away. I'll say this, Klein Forest looked a lot better than opening night against Eisenhower, they have some hungry players who are not afraid to step into the spotlight. Gray at times was simply unstoppable and I truly don''t believe there are 15 players in the area that are better. Falls' Quay Cleveland is putting up numbers early and the addition of Jae Branch gives them some of the best young talent in the area to keep the momentum going as they won't stumbling anytime soon. Ashley Caldwell keeps getting better and I don't think she realizes yet but she's a triple double waiting to happen

Kingwood one of favorites in Lady Gander Tip Off

Kingwood opened up the season last night with a 25 point victory as they have me on the edge of my seat already for District 13 competition which should be quite entertaining. First things first, they go against Clear Lake at 8am to kick-off the Lady Gander Tip Off at Baytown Lee HS. After looking at the updated schedule and since I don't sleep anyway, I'll be there to catch a few games before heading to the SBISD

Last night Gabby Stanton scored 16 points while Brooke Jolivet dropped 22 in their opening day win and I can't wait to see them along with Charlotte Hodges as all three of the 2015 GPR UTR players are ready to send a message

Rachel Tapps is ready to get wrapped up at Cy Ranch as the Mustangs defend their SBISD title. The 2016 GPR Under The Radar player is making some noise and she's learning quite a bit from a couple of seniors that are about to sign, Cienna Rivera (Louisiana Lafayette) and Sydney Coleman (TCU). I'm thinking the Mustangs are the favorites but I'm sure Cy Falls and Klein Forest will have something to say about it starting tomorrow

The Lady Gander Tip-Off and Conroe Tournament begins tomorrow as well and this is perfect for me as I'll catch SBISD tomorrow and the Conroe finals on my way back from Dallas Saturday morning. State major upset is why I'm taking road trip

I told you earlier about McKinney North and being that there in 4A, I'm still in disbelief they weren't ranked on anyone's pre-season list but I'm sure they're  cool with it because it's nothing like sneaking up on opponents. Well the sneaking is over as they've defeated there third TABC ranked team and if not mistaken, all are in 5A. Sure I take into consideration that the preseason and fall leagues mean absolutely nothing however when you have youth and hunger, it parlays into something else, especially when you sprinkle talent in that mixture

McKinney North hosts Irving Mac Arthur Friday, I'll see a little of that before heading over to watch Skyline host Duncanville. Skyline also wasn't ranked anywhere in the pre-season yet close to double digit D1 players tells me I need to be there because the streak might be stopped, well probably not but you never know. One of those Prince songs had a verse in it saying "if you didn't come to party, don't bother knocking on my door" so I'm knocking loud because all of these teams on Friday have a shot at being in Austin come March and that's when the really party starts

Area major upset

Caylinne Martin goes off for 17 as Langham Creek defeats Pearland on the road by 10. Pearland is ranked #8 by TABC and also high by SIMMIE. Pearland lost by 20 plus at Langham last season at made to the area F-4 so one more time, it ain't where you start it's where you finish, but the addition of Kayla Owens to Langham Creek probably solidifies District 17 as the areas toughest district. Biggest upset of the night coming up next, well not really because, well you'll see

Klein Forest holds on against Ike

Klein Forest is picked by many as well as me to make a run this season and I know what Eisenhower is capable of doing so with proximity, this was a no brainier. Like most opening day games, this one wasn't pretty,easy shots missed, turnovers and fouls dominated most of the first game and a combined 13 points in the third sort of gives you an idea however one thing I know is that both teams are better than they played and come February is truly all that matters

Jonisha Jacks was virtually unstoppable in the first half as she scored 10 points and probably had close to 10 rebounds for Ike who jumped out to a 10 -7 lead midway through the opening quarter, Ekiya Gray with six of those seven points. Jalea Preston's three tied the game at 12 and another gave a 15-14 lead after one. One thing about KF is that they have firepower from everywhere and Regina Scott took over in the second quarter. Scott and Johnson happen to be two of the best 5-9 posts in the city and both mad their presence felt throughout the opening half

Scott injured her finger and didn't return in the second half and after appeared KF was going to run off with it, Sonerka White and Shaqueria Debose caught fire for Ike. White is a smooth scorer that can shoot the long ball and get to the hole while Debose simply got wherever she wanted to on the floor whenever she wanted . Destiny Vincent and Tiara Marbley showed a lot of improvement and more importantly confidence as there energy throughout the game made things happen

Down the stretch, Preston and Gray simply refused to let KF win and I'll catch them again tomorrow in the SBISD against Cy Falls.

Cy Fair hosts College Park

As a sixth grader, I awarded Angela Harris a rising star for putting up numbers against players two or more years older, "It's not what you do, it's who you do it against." I have both Cy Woods and Cy Ranch ahead of them in the toughest district in the area but don't surprised if she, Taylor McCowan, Amber Lane and the Woods sisters, Shania and Asia pull off some surprises. tonight, they host Cami Shafer and her College Park teammates

Cook still in the kitchen at Goose Creek

The big question is "can she do it again" and I'm talking about Faith Cook helping lead Goose Creek Memorial to the playoffs. As a freshman, she put up number and gained posed throughout the season and you gotta remember two things as I've placed in two categories, both at an early age. One is size don't matter or doesn't matter, either way she's fearless and won't back down and the sky is the limit as far as where she'll land at the next level

Max Preps is still free, right Ralph?

 

Sometimes I have to use props to get my point across and my history with the local paper tells me that sites, times and scores are going to be wrong numerous times. I don't like running around at events trying to find out who such and such is and to place schedules and rosters on Max Preps is still free, well let me ask someone who knows on Twitter and if it isn't, I'll delete this post

Spring hosting Summer Creek

Brittany Smith, Bernesha Peters and Brittany Perkins were only 8th graders when I took this picture however I knew they would have a similar effect for Spring as the Klein Forest trio did. Mind you, Spring, unlike KF, was once a powerhouse and they even made it to state in 2006 however that was also the last year they made the playoffs until last season. They have a better than average chance to go past the first round this season and they open tonight at home against Summer Creek featuring Jayla Calhoun

Kingwood hosting Deer Park

The 2015 Big Three of Kingwood is ready to roll as Gabby Stanton, Charlotte Hodges and Brooke Jolivet host Deer Park. The three GPR UTR players blew completely up over the summer and I've designated tem a sleeper but trust me Stanton and her teammates are wide awake

Seniors ready to go out with bang as Bush hosts Cinco Ranch

Faith Ohanta and Crystal Chidomere are ready as well as Opie Ibrahim as those three seniors, along with junior Cierra Palmer played huge roles in the Broncos winning their district last season. The UTSA commit Chidomere is one of the most explosive scorers in the area while the others put in some impressive work over the summer including playing huge in The Last Run. Kelly Lynch and Corrin Evans are both capable scorers as well as they Cougars are looking to pull off an early season upset

Chasity Patterson (North Shore) Deauzya Richards (Cy Ranch) Alexis Morris (Legacy Christian) nnd Arianna Whitfield (Cy Ranch) have several things in common. First, they are all freshmen, second I've wrote about them several times each and third, I called em early

 I called Marissa Banfield (Westbury Christian) early too, real early as she was around ten, and all of these young ladies are among the top 2017 players in the state and beyond. Morris opened her season last night with 46 as she continues to blow me away however I have the sail up for many others because this is a MONSTER CLASS statewide

Dekaney @ Clear Springs as both stay in the hunt

Dekaney went to state year before last and came close to doing just that last season but one thing is for certain, they will be in the hunt once again and Mississippi State commit Kayla Nevitt is a big reason why. Another big reason is Lauren Grigsby, one of the most underrated juniors in the state along with recent West Texas A&M commit Abby Whyte but the game starts at the one and Jaelyn Richard-Harris is more than adequate to run the show and trust me, she's going to run it as she's one of the areas top points

Every time I think about Texas commit Brooke McCarty being a senior it reminds of not only how right I was, but how times has flown and nothing has changed on both of those statements as"The Chosen One" has left a lasting impression on many doubters. She, Columbia commit Paige Tippett and their hungry and exciting young teammates will create some problems and when you have someone worth 20 points to the team without scoring.........
